Superior Construction Wins IMPACT Project of the Year Award for BP Whiting Refinery Turnaround
WHITING, Ind. (December 10, 2025) — Superior Construction, in partnership with Iron Workers Local 395, has been nationally recognized with the IMPACT Project of the Year Award in the Industrial/Rigging/Machinery Moving category for the BP Whiting Refinery Coker Chute Replacement Turnaround project.
The award from IMPACT (Ironworker Management Progressive Action Cooperative Trust) recognizes exceptional union ironworker projects that demonstrate safety excellence, innovation and technical expertise.
The 75-day turnaround project at BP’s largest refinery required Superior’s team to replace six massive, 40-ton coker chutes in confined spaces while the facility remained partially operational. The chutes transport spent coke, a refinery byproduct, to collection areas. The team worked 12-hour shifts, seven days a week, while maintaining zero safety incidents.
Superior utilized a specialized 1,500-ton crane equipped with custom rigging apparatus designed to both lift and rotate the massive components. When unexpected alignment issues arose, the team fabricated new spacer rings and developed custom shimming techniques on-site, preventing delays.
“BP needed that coker unit back online in 75 days, no exceptions,” said Jesse Hanson, Superior Construction Industrial Division Manager. “When challenges came up, our ironworkers solved them on the spot. That’s what keeps a turnaround on track.”
The project continued Superior’s longstanding partnership with BP at their Whiting Refinery, where Superior has maintained more than 23 million work hours without a lost-time recordable injury.
IMPACT is a labor-management partnership dedicated to expanding opportunities for union ironworkers and their contractors through progressive cooperative programs. Project award winners are selected based on safety performance, innovation in construction techniques, quality project management, environmental consideration and excellence in partnering and teamwork.
