Superior Begins Concrete Paving for Major Boeing Expansion at Cecil Airport
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (January 5, 2026) — Superior Construction, an American family-owned infrastructure contractor, has mobilized at Cecil Airport in Jacksonville to perform concrete apron paving for Boeing’s South Yard expansion project. As a subcontractor to Haskell, Superior’s scope includes placing more than 21,000 cubic yards of specialized airport-grade concrete, which is designed to support military aircraft weighing more than 400,000 pounds.
The project supports Boeing’s strategic expansion of its military maintenance and repair facilities, creating additional capacity for servicing Navy and Air Force aircraft, including KC-46 refueling tankers, F-18s and F-22s.
Using its nearby batch plant, Superior produces and delivers its own concrete, including the specialized airport-grade mix required for this project. This allows crews to place up to 800 cubic yards daily, far exceeding the 200-yard capacity typical of traditional ready-mix delivery.
The project marks Superior’s third collaboration with Boeing at Cecil Airport, including a military aircraft maintenance apron completed last fall, and represents the evolution of a strong working relationship built on trust and proven performance.
“Having our batch plant means we can respond immediately — if the weather clears, we can be out there pouring that day,” said Greg Brown, Division Manager at Superior. “That flexibility, combined with our consistent quality, is why Boeing and Haskell keep coming back to us.”
For Project Manager Austin Braun, a Marine Corps veteran who transitioned from military service at the Pentagon to construction management, working on military infrastructure creates a connection between two important parts of his life.
“I used to visit these types of facilities during my service, wondering how these massive facilities got built,” Braun said. “Now being on this side, actually building the infrastructure that supports our military aircraft; it’s come full circle for me.”
Superior began initial handwork on taxiway tie-ins in late September, with the first concrete pour occurring October 8. The team will continue mainline paving operations through the project’s scheduled completion in May 2026.
The completed 36,600-square-yard apron will support two new hangars currently under construction and accommodate Boeing’s expanded military division operations, creating additional high-skilled maintenance and aircraft mechanic positions in Northeast Florida.
