Superior Begins Work on $22.3M Project to Improve, Widen County Road 209 in Clay County
GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. (August 01, 2024) — Superior Construction, an American family-owned infrastructure contractor, has begun major improvements to County Road 209 (Russell Road) in the Green Cove Springs area of Clay County, Florida. After extensive coordination with county officials, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and a rail-based freight transportation company, Superior is widening a 1.1-mile stretch of highway from two lanes to four between the Peters Creek Bridge and U.S. Highway 17.
This section of CR 209 has seen significant backups at a left turn near a railroad crossing. The highway expansion is expected to improve traffic flow and make the road safer. The rural roadway will be converted to a more urban design with bike paths and sidewalks. Planned additions also include new curbs and gutters and a median turn lane.
“We’re proud of the previous success we’ve had working with Clay County officials on projects like the Cathedral Oak Parkway connector to the First Coast Expressway,” said Superior’s Northeast Florida Division Manager Brian McGarity. “We coordinated scheduling with them to ensure the work on CR 209 causes the least disruption possible for drivers in this busy area.”
Superior’s scope of work includes:
Excavating 112,342 cubic yards of soil
Laying 10,000 linear feet of drainage pipe
Applying 8,900 tons of asphalt
The $22.3 million project is expected to be complete by fall 2026.
