Superior Construction Awarded Bridge Maintenance Contract on SR 67 in Morgan County

MORGAN COUNTY, Ind. (April 10, 2026) – Superior Construction has been awarded a contract with the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Seymour District to perform preventive maintenance on four bridge structures along State Road 67 in Morgan County, Indiana. Work is expected to begin April 6, with substantial completion targeted for October 2026.

The project covers two separate locations: SR 67 over White Lick Creek, just south of downtown Mooresville, and SR 67 over Sycamore Creek, approximately 8.5 miles to the south near Martinsville. Each location includes separate northbound and southbound bridge structures.

The work is more concentrated at White Lick Creek, where Superior will replace the deck surface, reconstruct bridge approaches with new concrete pavement, and complete associated drainage and earthwork along the creek. At Sycamore Creek, crews will replace the terminal joint and install polymer-modified asphalt between existing pavement sections. Across all four structures, Superior will overlay more than 4,600 square yards of bridge deck and place more than 2,800 tons of riprap around the piers to address ongoing erosion.

A key challenge will be working within an active waterway. Debris buildup from repeated flooding, including large trees carried downstream, must be cleared before earthwork can begin around the bridge piers. The team will install a sandbag cofferdam to facilitate construction while closely monitoring water levels, which can rise quickly. Project Manager John Cory and the team will coordinate closely with INDOT ahead of earthwork, as current site conditions differ significantly from the original drawings.

“When you’ve worked around waterways before, you know what to look for,” Cory said. “We’ve dealt with cofferdams, flooding and rapidly changing site conditions. That experience helps you spark the conversation before work begins and collaborate to come up with a solution that benefits both the contractor and department.”

This contract marks Superior’s first with INDOT’s Seymour District, expanding the company’s established presence across Indiana. Superior has completed numerous similar bridge and roadway projects across the state and will draw on that experience to navigate the conditions at this site.

The project team is led by Division Manager Tim Koster, Assistant Project Manager II John Cory and Superintendent Rich Palmer.
