Superior Construction Awarded Bridge Replacement Project in Hammond, Indiana
HAMMOND, Ind. (September 04, 2025) — Superior Construction will replace an aging bridge structure in Hammond, Indiana, as part of a major infrastructure improvement project for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). Superior crews will replace the existing three-span US 20 bridge over Kennedy Avenue and Indiana Harbor Belt railroad tracks with a modern two-span steel plate girder structure. The new design eliminates one pier to provide increased horizontal and vertical clearance for current and future railroad operations while delivering improved infrastructure for INDOT.
Superior, an American family-owned infrastructure contractor, will self-perform the majority of the work, including concrete bridge construction, piers, mechanically stabilized earth installation, excavation and embankment, storm pipe systems, piling, structural steel erection and concrete paving. The site presents complex coordination challenges due to active railroad operations and gas lines that require relocation. In addition, Superior will closely collaborate with utility companies to de-energize high-voltage lines during critical construction phases, with some outages requiring up to 30 days’ advance notice.
Project Manager Nick Petkus will lead the effort, which marks the latest of many Superior collaborations with the transportation agency. “The fact that we were awarded this work shows INDOT’s continued trust in us,” said Petkus. “Our experience with utilities and railroads helps us guide clients through these complex projects while maintaining safety, staying on schedule, and giving communities the infrastructure they deserve.”
Construction will begin in June 2026, with substantial completion anticipated in August 2027. The improved infrastructure will serve the Hammond community and regional transportation network for decades to come.
The bridge will require full closure during construction. The detour for US 20 will utilize US 20/Indianapolis Boulevard, Columbus Drive/US 12 and US 12.
