GARY, Ind. (December 9, 2025) — Superior Construction, an American family-owned infrastructure contractor, has been awarded a major contract to construct new cargo and corporate aprons at Gary/Chicago International Airport. The federally funded project will relocate and expand operations at the airport to accommodate increased aviation demand in the greater Chicago region. The facility currently serves UPS and has the potential to attract additional cargo carriers.

Superior will construct a new cargo apron in the northwest quadrant of the airport, separating cargo operations from passenger and commuter aircraft traffic. The project also includes a locally funded corporate apron to serve a new hangar.

“This project supports the airport’s long-term vision to become a major cargo hub serving the Chicago metropolitan area,” said Nick Petkus, Superior’s project manager. “We’re building infrastructure that will help position this airport for significant growth over the next decade.”

Superior will self-perform all concrete paving operations, placing 120,000 square yards of 15-inch thick FAA-specification concrete. The full scope includes eight aircraft parking positions and enhanced taxiway access.

The project represents Superior’s continued partnership with Gary/Chicago International Airport, building on previous work, including the main runway reconstruction completed in 2019. Superior will utilize advanced drone technology and GPS-guided equipment systems throughout the project for precision earthwork, quality control, and progress documentation.

Construction started this fall with substantial completion targeted for late 2025 or early 2026. Winter weather that restricts concrete placement (below 40 degrees) will present timing challenges. This will require strategic scheduling and potential seasonal adjustments, areas where Superior has extensive experience.

Located 20 minutes from downtown Chicago, the Gary/Chicago International Airport serves as the region’s third-largest airport with plans for runway extensions and enhanced cargo capabilities. Superior Construction has maintained continuous operations in Gary, Indiana, for nearly 90 years, with original offices established in the community.
