Superior Construction Completes Innovative I-4/Daryl Carter Interchange in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. (August 22, 2025) — Superior Construction has successfully transformed the Daryl Carter Parkway overpass at I-4 in Orlando into a cutting-edge Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). VIDEO HERE. The new interchange, which opened to traffic in July, marks a significant step toward reducing traffic congestion in one of Florida’s fastest-growing regions.

Superior completed this challenging project as part of FDOT’s I-4 Beyond the Ultimate initiative. Crews converted the existing overpass into a DDI design that eliminates left-turn conflicts and cuts the risk of crashes in half.

“Some drivers may not be familiar with DDIs yet, but once they experience the improved traffic flow and safety firsthand, they’ll understand the benefits,” said Ryan Hamrick, Division Manager at Superior Construction. “The I-4 Beyond the Ultimate initiative is a transformative effort for Florida’s infrastructure, and we’re proud FDOT continues to entrust Superior with the complex engineering and coordination required to deliver results at this scale.”

Advanced engineering and safety features

The innovative DDI design briefly moves traffic on Daryl Carter Parkway to the left side of the roadway at controlled signals, eliminating the need for left turns across oncoming traffic. This design reduces the number of traffic signal phases from four to two, significantly decreasing wait times while improving safety and efficiency.

Superior’s scope of work included constructing three new ramps connecting I-4 to Daryl Carter Parkway: exit ramps from both eastbound and westbound I-4 to Daryl Carter Parkway, as well as an entrance ramp to eastbound I-4. The project also features enhanced pedestrian safety elements, including new bicycle lanes, sidewalks protected by concrete barriers, and improved crosswalks.

Supporting regional growth

The new interchange addresses critical transportation needs in one of Florida’s fastest-growing regions. With more than 278,000 vehicles traveling daily through nearby I-4 interchanges and Orange County adding more than 100,000 residents in the past five years, the infrastructure improvements provide essential relief to the area’s transportation network.

The Daryl Carter interchange connects directly to the Lake Buena Vista area’s retail, dining and entertainment destinations, offering motorists an alternative route that helps reduce congestion at the heavily trafficked I-4 and Apopka-Vineland Road interchange.

Part of larger I-4 improvements

Superior’s work at Daryl Carter Parkway includes the construction of a westbound express lane segment that will connect with broader I-4 Express lane extensions. When complete, these improvements will extend the express lanes by 10 miles westbound, providing enhanced travel options for longer-distance trips through Central Florida.

As an original builder of America’s interstate system, Superior continues to solve transportation challenges through innovative approaches that prioritize safety, efficiency and long-term value.
