Superior Construction Selected for Air Cargo Expansion at Jacksonville International Airport
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (July 14, 2025) — The Jacksonville Aviation Authority has awarded Superior Construction the contract for the Air Cargo 3 Apron Expansion at Jacksonville International Airport. The project will expand critical infrastructure to accommodate increased military and commercial aircraft operations at one of Florida’s busiest airports.
Superior crews will add approximately 11,600 square yards of airfield concrete pavement to the existing Air Cargo 3 Apron. In addition, they will conduct site grading; install airfield lighting improvements, including new high-mast lighting; modify stormwater ponds; and improve drainage. The expanded apron will primarily serve larger aircraft and charter flights for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“The Jacksonville Aviation Authority team knows they can count on us because we’ve delivered for them before,” said Superior Construction Division Manager Greg Brown. “When you’re working on vital airport infrastructure, there’s no room for mistakes. This partnership keeps getting stronger, and together we’re building what our region needs.”
Superior Construction will self-perform all grading and concrete work for the project, utilizing the company’s own concrete batch plant for optimal quality control and efficiency. The project will use standard FAA concrete specifications, including 16 inches of P501 concrete pavement over a seven-inch P306 lean concrete base, meeting rigorous aviation industry standards.
Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2025, following completion of security clearances and permitting processes required for work within the Airport Operations Area. The project team, led by Project Manager Ethan Schwan and Superintendent Mike Andrepont, expects substantial completion by late December 2025.
Superior Construction has extensive experience in airport and aviation infrastructure projects throughout Florida, having completed runway improvements at Cecil Airport in 2020 and 2022, in addition to recent apron expansion work at Jacksonville International Airport.
