Superior Construction to Expand Traffic-congested Bridge Over Railroad Yard in Indianapolis Suburb
HENDRICKS COUNTY, In. (September 12, 2024) — Superior Construction, an American family-owned infrastructure contractor, begins work this fall to reconstruct and build a new section of the Dan Jones Road bridge over the CSX Railroad yard in Avon. The bridge will be expanded from two lanes to four, easing the traffic congestion that frequently develops in that area of Hendricks County. Superior will leverage extensive experience gained on similar projects to coordinate with the railroad to maintain worker safety.
Currently, the 108-foot-long bridge has one northbound lane and one southbound lane. In phase one, which begins in October, Superior will build a new two-lane bridge structure alongside the current bridge.
In phase two, traffic will shift to the new bridge, and Superior will demolish the superstructure comprising the old bridge’s upper sections. Crews will then build a new superstructure onto the existing bridge pilings to match the new bridge constructed in phase one. When the project is finished, the bridge will feature two southbound and two northbound lanes.
Throughout the process, Superior will coordinate with CSX Railroad, which has up to 60 trains passing through the area daily. Flaggers will communicate with construction crews to make sure all team members are in safe positions before trains come through. Superior’s planning and logistics experience will allow crews to adjust working conditions on short notice. The company’s extensive safety protocols not only keep crews safe, but drivers on the overhead bridge, as well.
In addition to four traffic lanes, the completed bridge will have a six-foot-eight-inch-wide sidewalk on one side and a four-foot-four-inch-wide sidewalk on the other. Both will have an
ornamental railing containing an “A” insignia to represent the community of Avon. The railing and bridge plans were designed by Egis (formerly Beam, Longest and Neff).
Superior expects the $18 million project to be completed by April 2027.
