Jacksonville Regional Transportation Center (JRTC) Pedestrian Bridge

Building a pedestrian bridge while keeping a busy transit hub running takes creative problem-solving. Superior Construction tackled that challenge as part of the Jacksonville Transit Authority (JTA) Administration Building and Bus Transfer Facility project. As a subcontractor, Superior erected the structural steel pedestrian bridge. The work was unusual in that crews had to slide bridge components under overhanging balconies while the Greyhound Bus Station remained fully operational below.

Project Highlights
  • Asymmetrical rigging and picking procedures to navigate under overhanging balconies and soffits
  • Maintaining continuous operation of the active Greyhound Bus Station throughout construction
  • 605 linear feet of 18-inch square prestressed concrete piles, some of which were within feet of existing JTA structures.
  • 167.50 cubic yards of concrete and 33,937 pounds of reinforcement steel
  • Adaptation from a traditional transportation project to a vertical construction environment

The Work

Superior Construction installed 605 linear feet of 18-inch square prestressed concrete piles, 167.50 cubic yards of concrete, and 33,937 pounds of reinforcement steel. The project required adapting from traditional heavy civil construction methods to a vertical construction environment  to coordinate with ongoing building construction activities and trades.

The team developed specialized installation procedures, including asymmetrical rigging and picking methods to slide the bridge structure under overhanging balconies and soffits. Throughout construction, the active regional Greyhound Bus Station remained fully operational.  Superior’s strategic planning accommodated continuous public access while maintaining safety standards and project schedules.

The Results

Superior Construction successfully delivered the JRTC Pedestrian Bridge on schedule, providing Jacksonville Transit Authority with critical infrastructure that enhances passenger connectivity and safety. The completed bridge structure now serves as an essential component of Jacksonville’s regional transportation network, facilitating safe and efficient passenger movement within the transit facility.

Through innovative construction techniques and careful project coordination, Superior overcame significant site constraints while maintaining uninterrupted transit operations, demonstrating the company’s versatility in adapting heavy civil construction expertise to specialized urban transportation environments.
