I-4 / Daryl Carter Parkway Interchange
Superior transformed the Daryl Carter Parkway overpass at Interstate 4 in Orlando into a diverging diamond interchange designed to eliminate left-turn conflicts and cut crash risk by half. The new configuration briefly shifts traffic to the left side of Daryl Carter Parkway at controlled signals, reducing traffic signal phases from four to two and significantly decreasing wait times. The new interchange provides an alternative route to heavily trafficked I-4 interchanges in one of Florida’s fastest-growing regions, where more than 278,000 vehicles travel daily.
- Converted existing overpass into diverging diamond interchange design that reduces crash risk by half
- Constructed three new ramps connecting I-4 to Daryl Carter Parkway
- Added bicycle lanes, protected sidewalks and improved crosswalks
- Maintained traffic flow through multi-phase temporary traffic control plan
New interchange construction at I-4 including three interchange ramps, collector-distributor roadway and diverging diamond interchange on Daryl Carter Parkway; modifications to existing Daryl Carter Parkway bridge; additional lanes along I-4; upgrades to drainage, signage, pavement markings, lighting, signalization and ITS facilities; modifications to storm drain facilities; closure and piping of existing ditch with installation of new cross drains beneath Palm Parkway and I-4

The Work
Superior completed this project as part of FDOT’s I-4 Beyond the Ultimate initiative, which extends improvements beyond the 21-mile I-4 Ultimate project through interchange upgrades and express lane extensions across Central Florida. Work included constructing exit ramps from both eastbound and westbound I-4 to Daryl Carter Parkway, building an entrance ramp to eastbound I-4 and modifying the existing Daryl Carter Parkway bridge to accommodate the new traffic pattern. Superior added lanes along I-4, upgraded lighting and signalization throughout the corridor and modified drainage infrastructure to convey stormwater from Big Sand Lake through the I-4 and Central Florida Parkway Interchange area. Crews also closed and piped an existing ditch with new cross drains installed beneath Palm Parkway and I-4.
The project’s location in a highly congested area near I-4 and SR 535 required careful traffic coordination. Superior implemented a multi-phase temporary traffic control plan that kept vehicles moving throughout construction while minimizing disruptions to local attractions and adjacent interchanges.

The Results
The interchange opened to traffic in July 2025. The diverging diamond configuration eliminates left-turn conflicts, cutting crash risk by 50 percent compared to conventional interchanges. The simplified two-phase signal system reduces wait times throughout the interchange, improving traffic flow in one of Central Florida’s most congested corridors.
Superior’s work includes construction of a westbound express lane segment that will connect with broader I-4 Express lane extensions. When complete, these improvements will extend the express lanes by 10 miles westbound, creating enhanced mobility options for longer-distance trips through Central Florida.
