SR 56 Diverging Diamond Interchange

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is converting an existing diamond interchange at I-75 / SR 56 into a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). The innovative traffic pattern is meant to alleviate congestion, improve pedestrian safety, and reduce accidents in this rapidly growing area of Pasco County, FL. Superior Construction was hired to take over as general contractor when the original contractor went out of business.

The Work

Superior entered the project after work had begun, which presented unique challenges. At the time Superior assumed the role, the public and FDOT were frustrated with the lack of progress from the previous contractor. In addition, Superior encountered issues with earlier work. As barriers arise, Superior is able to address the issues swiftly using both our internal teamwork and excellent established relationships with subcontractors and FDOT to keep the project moving forward.

The Superior team recognizes the high priority of the project, so we are using every resource at our disposal. We are working behind the scenes and after hours to address problems as they arise so work can continue each day. When the team encounters an unexpected barrier, work continues in other areas in order to advance the timeline. We address the current material and labor shortages by sourcing both field workers and materials from other nearby Superior projects. We also have secured labor and materials leveraging our positive relationships with vendors and subcontractors.

The Results

Even with the stumbling blocks presented by taking over a project already in progress, Superior has met — and often exceeded — all milestones. Our established relationships with subcontractors and FDOT, together with our all-hands-on-deck teamwork approach allows us to keep the project on target. The Superior team was even able to complete an important milestone — opening up a lane of traffic — ahead of schedule and before the holiday season, relieving traffic congestion during this busy travel time. The project is on target for completion by the deadline of June 2022.
