Safety in Action: Travis Bergstrom Lives Superior’s Core Value
PORTAGE, In. (April 18, 2025) — When Travis Bergstrom talks about safety, people listen. With 24 years of experience in the field, Travis has earned that respect through unwavering dedication to protecting workers across Northwest Indiana’s most challenging industrial and petrochemical environments.
As Superior’s Midwest Industrial/Petrochemical Division’s Health, Safety and Environment Manager, Travis exemplifies Superior’s Core Value of Safety, which is the foundation of every decision our company makes.
Travis first started building things while working as his father’s carpenter assistant in the 1990s. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety and Health from Illinois State University in 2000.
“I was drawn to safety by the opportunity to help others,” Travis explains.
Today, Travis oversees Superior’s complete steel mill and petrochemical plant workforce, performing site visits for job hazard analysis and risk assessment. His day-to-day work involves “interacting with employees, supervisors, management, and clients to provide a resource in heavy industrial/petrochemical safety.”

Travis believes so much in the importance of safety he leads BP’s Contractor Safety Committee, communicating members’ concerns and recommendations to BP’s Whiting Refinery management team. This collaborative approach has strengthened safety protocols across multiple companies.
When asked what safety means to Superior, Travis doesn’t hesitate: “It means protecting the people I enjoy working with every day. It means having their backs – I know they have mine.”
The impact of Travis’s leadership is evident in Superior’s exceptional safety record. As a Board of Certified Safety Professionals Construction Health and Safety Technician, Travis combines technical expertise with strong communication skills to foster an exemplary safety culture.
“Clients should understand the commitment from the top and the required buy-in from our construction crews throughout the company,” he notes when discussing Superior’s thorough safety plans.
His passion for safety stems from an earnest desire to see all colleagues return home to their families each day. Through his mentorship of safety representatives, specialists, and interns, Travis ensures that Superior’s safety culture will continue to thrive for generations.
