Empowerment in Action: A Superior Core Value Story

Empowerment in Action: A Superior Core Value Story

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 14, 2025) — When James Digamon joined Superior Construction as a Business Analyst in early 2024, he was taking a calculated risk. As a certified public accountant with extensive experience in traditional accounting positions, he had never planned to fill a Business Analyst role. However, he decided to explore the opportunity to combine his financial expertise with his background as an Army Reserve engineer.

“I knew I wasn’t getting in via the traditional path,” James says. “Coming from big accounting firms and investment banks, this was a very unique route. But Superior saw value in both sides of my experience.”

Under the guidance of Superior’s Organizational Development Manager, Jessica Paske, James has found himself in a job that allows him to help shape the future of the company.

“Our department tackles various tasks, but we’re focused on understanding what Superior will look like in five years and creating the roadmap to get there,” he explains. “We’re identifying gaps in the organizational chart and analyzing everything from capital equipment needs to process improvements.”

James says the freedom supervisors have given him to define the scope of his work exemplifies Superior’s Core Value of Empowerment. Rather than being handed a rigid set of responsibilities, James was encouraged to help develop his role.

“Scott, our CFO, and Jessica both said, ‘Trust me, you’re the person for this,'” he recalls. “They let me leverage my experience to almost develop my own position while always providing the tools and support I needed.”

James particularly appreciates how Superior’s leadership style mirrors what he’s experienced in the Army Reserve, where empowerment isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a necessity.

“In the Army, when you put soldiers in tough situations, you have to empower them,” he explains. “Jessica operates the same way. She could easily handle certain tasks herself, but instead, she takes the time to help me learn and develop new skills.”

One recent example stands out to James.

“There was a fix needed in our accounting system that Jessica could have completed in five minutes,” he says. “Instead, we stretched it over two weeks so I could learn the process properly. She saw the difference between a short-term gain and long-term value.”

As both a Business Analyst and an Army Reserve Major, James juggles multiple responsibilities. Superior’s supportive culture makes this balance possible, with the company working around his military commitments and providing flexibility when needed. This support recently prompted James to nominate Jessica for the Department of Defense Patriot Award, which recognizes supervisors who go above and beyond in supporting their Guard and Reserve employees.

“Superior’s approach to empowerment reminds me in the best way of my experience in the military,” James reflects. “Just like in the Army Reserve, where leaders trust their soldiers to make critical decisions in challenging situations, Superior genuinely empowers their people. They don’t just give you responsibilities—they give you the authority and support to make meaningful decisions. That culture of trust and empowerment is what truly helps people grow and succeed here.”
