North Split I-70 Eastbound Flyover Bridge Opens to the Public
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Aug. 1, 2022) — Superior Construction, an American family-owned infrastructure contractor, is proud to announce that the largest structure on the I-65 / I-70 North Split project in Downtown Indianapolis is now operational. As of July 1, traffic traveling on I-65 Southbound to I-70 eastbound has been shifted onto the new flyover bridge, the highest point on the North Split interchange.
“This is the most significant milestone for the North Split project aside from its substantial completion date, so we’re excited for it to be open to traffic,” said Dan Sopczak, President of Superior Construction’s Midwest Business Unit. “We’ve been able to maintain our substantial completion goal, despite numerous delays through tremendous coordination and teamwork efforts between Superior Construction, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), HNTB, project designer Janssen & Spaans Engineering (JSE), subcontractors, material suppliers and our multitude of skilled tradespeople who have worked tirelessly to get us to this point.”
Over the course of the project, Superior has overcome supply chain delays and labor availability challenges by utilizing unconventional bridge construction and problem-solving coordination to immediately address issues in the field as they arose to keep the project on track.
“So far, we’ve placed over 16,000 cubic yards of structural concrete, driven over 33,000 lineal feet of bearing pile and erected 265 beams,” added Sopczak. “Those numbers speak to just how big of an undertaking this is, so it’s exciting that substantial completion of the project is in sight.”
The I-65 / I-70 North Split is the busiest interchange in central Indiana. Once complete in late 2022, the $320 million project will reduce congestion, improve driver safety and provide a long-lasting, maintenance-free structure for decades to come.
