Superior Construction awarded $90.3M Contract to Replace San Carlos Bridge
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (MARCH 20, 2023) — Lee County Commissioners awarded Superior Construction a $90.3M contract to replace the San Carlos Bridge over Big Carlos Pass on Florida’s west coast. The bridge connects the south end of Fort Myers Beach to Lover’s Key on Estero Boulevard.
The project’s scope includes construction of a new fixed-span bridge with a 60-foot navigation clearance over Big Carlos Pass, which will replace the existing nearly 60-year-old drawbridge structure. With an estimated 75-year life span, the new bridge will feature a fishing pier, a 6-foot wide pedestrian sidewalk, and designated bike lanes. The contract also includes the creation of an offshore artificial reef using the old San Carlos Bridge.
Construction on the project is estimated to begin this spring and is expected to last two to three years. A number of local media outlets shared the news, including The News-Press, Gulfshore Business and Florida Construction News.
