BP Whiting Refinery Coker Chute Replacement

BP Whiting Refinery, the largest refinery in North America, processes approximately 440,000 barrels of crude oil daily. When the facility had only 75 days to replace six massive coker chutes that transport spent coke to collection areas, BP selected Superior Construction based on its proven safety record and execution capabilities.

Superior previously completed portions of BP’s multibillion-dollar Whiting Refinery Modernization Project between 2008 and 2012, logging an average of two million hours annually with zero lost-time recordable incidents – experience that positioned the team to deliver under an aggressive turnaround schedule.

Project Highlights
  • Replaced six 40-ton coker chutes using a 1,500-ton crane with custom rigging apparatus
  • Completed 100,000 manhours with 80 employees working 12-hour shifts, seven days a week
  • Maintained more than 23 million work hours at BP Whiting Refinery without a lost-time recordable injury
  • Fabricated custom spacer rings on-site to resolve alignment issues
