Overview

This project included constructing a new single-leaf bascule bridge over the Indiana Harbor Canal, which allowed for more efficient shipping of materials between ArcelorMittal’s Indiana Harbor East and West Plants. Once completed, the bridge allowed materials to be transferred by rail within the plant limits, in lieu of on-road trucking. Complex structural steel erection, temporary shoring, and precision machinery alignment were all important components of this project performed by Superior Construction. By temporarily supporting the counterweight section during assembly and loading, we were able to transport the leaf section by barge and set in place within a 12-hour closure of the Indiana Harbor shipping canal.
