This project included constructing a new single-leaf bascule bridge over the Indiana Harbor Canal, which allowed for more efficient shipping of materials between ArcelorMittal’s Indiana Harbor East and West Plants. Once completed, the bridge allowed materials to be transferred by rail within the plant limits in lieu of on-road trucking. Project components included complex structural stell erection, temporary shoring, and precision machinery alignment. By temporarily supporting the counterweight section during assembly and loading, Superior Construction transported the leaf section by barge and set in place within a 12-hour closure of the Indiana Harbor shipping canal.
