Lake Michigan Lakefront Rehabilitation & Park Improvements
Funded by the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority (RDA) and the City of Whiting, along with local, state, and federal funds, this project improved the Whiting Lakefront Park and the surrounding lakefront area.
- 15,250 tons of new revetment stone along the lakeshore
- 4,990 linear feet of shell pipe pile
- 317-ft long permanent fishing pier
- 16,000 cubic yards of sand dredged
- 11,000 cubic yards of topsoil placed
- 7,200 square feet of asphalt for bike trail throughout the park
- 9 rain gardens
- 7,300 square feet concrete boat ramp
- 1,100 square feet concrete overlook
- 59,000 square feet of colored and non-colored concrete stones
Superior Construction worked with the City to implement the master plan by developing and installing amenities connected with the lakefront. Prior to beginning the improvements, we removed the existing concrete revetment stone and fishing pier. We then placed new revetment stone and constructed a boat ramp, concrete overlook, breakwater, floating dock system, and a decorative promenade walk along the lakeshore. Additional enhancements included a fish habitat beneath the fish pier, an asphalt bike trail throughout the park, a limestone seating block area, nine rain gardens, new asphalt roadway. Park features included plants, trees, benches, bike racks, light poles, and an electric car charging station.
